"Whatever happened in there is beyond me."
Mei gazes through the transparent glass of a shaggy looking house's side window. Even though she was wearing mittens the cold from the glass seeped through and felt much more like ice. She would ward her breath away from the window by deterring its progress, breathing scantily through her nose, so she wouldn't fog it up. Her brow is quirked notably. What was presumably positioned in her purse would be able to get a view of what she was looking at inside of the building. There was something that had burnt out the fireplace, and there was barely anything left of it. Stripped to the bone, literally. There was a charred skeleton in the place of wood, modestly dressed by gristle and scraps of skin. It looked about hours since this actually happened since there was no car outside. Mei's expression is bland, seemingly not effected by the morbid sight before them.
"We're going to find out what happened, though." Mei confirms as she looks towards the content of her purse. Where her purse would used to be. Substituted by it was something higher quality; it was a bag of sorts that could be adjusted much easier and confine a lot more stuff. It also had an appearance that made her less subject to attempted muggings. Mei is wordless when it comes to explaining why she wanted to figure such a thing out. The police were lazy around these parts, so there was no doubt it would take them days to even notice that the person was gone.

A lack of questioning, an absence of attention; both had bestowed little clue as to the happenings outside of his makeshift abode. Ramble of some kind had begun to trickle into the bag, revealing a curiosity about the goings-ons within a structure of some kind. The rodent demon was just where Mei had left him, of course. Reposed he was within its solitary confines, drizzled beneath light-fracture curtains of shade. This had become too common an occurrence, but made up the majority of his freshly adopted life.

“Are we?” Mosquito asked, though his eyes remained closed, slightless staring up towards the container’s ceiling or lack there of. He did not appear overly enthralled. “What’re we doin’ this for again?” Despite an overall lack of interest, he made the inquiry anyway.

"Money." Came Mei's disyllabic response. This answer was probably highly predictable if Mosquito had become accustomed to Mei's general nature. A brief glance is taken around as she scans the area for anyone who may have been looking. Then, she heightens her senses to check if anything had been hidden. When she doesn't feel the vibe she usually gets when she does that it is confirmed that nothing was around. Her hands extend forth as she begins to pry at the window. It flies up unexpectedly, and she almost jams her fingers but stops herself from doing so. A brow is lightly raised.
"Whoever did this obviously made their exit through here. Woulda been obvious to the police as to why this wasn't locked." She'd elaborate to Mosquito before crudely climbing over the brick favouring wall and making her way inside.
Her nose would promptly wrinkle as it catches the scent of rotting corpse. Her demonic eyes survey the area and visually probe it for anything that she could find. There didn't seem to be anything useful to look at moment. Several steps are taking forward towards the skeleton. Her eyes slowly examine the blackened bones. It smelled like cartilage, a putrid aroma.
"The flesh is gone entirely, very few scraps left. This wasn't burned off, this was stripped off." She looks towards Mosquito. "Can you smell that? Something smells like vinegar, and maybe kerosene."
Mei stands up from her recently achieved knelt position. There was a dining room adjacent. Her head tilts curiously to the side.

“Huh. Well, y’ can never have enough a that,” Mosquito replied. A lethargic roll to the side was the beginning of his efforts to climb over the purses side and take his place upon the ground beside her. A glance painted the wall’s side, yielded after crossing the window in question. From Mei’s verbal ponderings, it appeared the aim was to figure out who had been involved in this apparent murder case.

Crossing the remains of the victim was a smidge-bit unnerving. Despite the dire, malicious air staining the structures interior, Mosquito approached the skeleton before tracing a sizing eye about it. The scent was horrid, but it appeared it took quite a putrid smell to churn the rodent’s stomach. “Could’ve just revived’em and accede, but there ain’t enough to work with…”

"You can revive?" Mei seems a bit confused at first, her brow quirking. She crosses her arms below her chest, before beginning to examine the kitchen. It just so happened to be the room she'd visited first. "Oh well. Could have revived him and asked him, but then it wouldn't have looked like whatever happened to him did." The girl would contemplate momentarily. "Though I suppose the point would be restoring a life."
Continuing to walk through the kitchen she began to look at the stove. Her suspicion seems to rise when she puts her hand on an inactive oven burner. This is marked by her escalating a single brow, which seemed to be done frequently given how peculiar this scenario was. "This is gonna sound gross but, this oven burner is still warm. Like the oven was used recently. With the smell of vinegar and kerosene... I think those all connect." There was a protrusion and one of the floor boards were sticking out slightly, but she didn't seem to notice it. Her attention pools towards Mosquito.
"Do you see anything?" She enquires.

"Seemed t' work on an unfortunate fellow rodent I crossed recently," Mosquito replied. "Took a few tries, but y'know." Not entirely interested he was in supplying a response to the notion of the point being to restore of life. That did not particularly move him; but with the expenditure of a little bit of effort, the ordeal might have been resolved swiftly. Though, their investigation continued. His eyes lazily glazed the floor for that is where the most easily fell. Mei's verbal ponderings sailed over his head for the most part. Idly, his lumbering, somewhat cautious scamper lead him to a slightly elevated piece of floor. He thought little of it, but did lay against it, using it as a makeshift pillow.

"Anythin' strange y' mean?" he asked, though had not place a terrible amount of effort in judging whether or not there was anything out of place. "Mm...don't think so."

A brow would be arched as she looked at Mosquito’s new position. At first, she didn’t heed his movements that much, or so it seemed. “You’re gonna have to get up for a sec.” She states as she takes several steps towards the erect piece of floorboard he’d decided to perch himself idly upon. Once she’d briefly made her way to her designation she would kneel down, her nigh demonic eyes tinged with a glimpse of victory as she, not consensually, began to work on what inhabited the space underneath the floorboard.
Tension becomes apparent at her brow as it seemed that she’d been having a little bit of trouble. “There’s something stuck in it.” She would clarify as her thumb and index finger perched fiercely and steadfastly on the side of an apparent handle. Eventually she’d haul out the object wedged into the bottom of the floorboard, tucked in there securely like a refuge in a camp. She intensifies her gaze on the acquired item.
“Look here.” She points her finger towards the blade of the knife. The knife was the object pulled from underneath the board. Her finger skates along the elongated edge of the blade. “This isn’t a utility knife, nor is it a kitchen knife. This is a skinning knife--ow.” She winces slightly as a drip of blood is drawn from her fingertip. It seemed to be a result of her clumsily playing around with the weapon. Her lips enclose around the tip of her finger as she seemingly attempts to dry the wound with a sucking gesture. She grimaces. “As you can see, it’s prominent for easily removing human flesh... And guess what? The stove suspiciously was on, and there’s a body over there without anything left. You know what that is, Mosquito? Disgusting.”

"Huh?" he muttered, remaining there momentarily until Mei's approach urged his relocation. His miniscule strides were found splintered with a subtle reluctance, though waned as he plopped himself down once more to look upon the actions of the girl. From this fraction of floor, she extracted the blade of a knife. It was proposed to be a skinning knife, though did not mean much to him at that point. The knife's nature was confirmed with a demonstration, one that caused a faint grimace to surface over a lazily pointing Mosquito. The fissure within the finger's tip adopted a wispy stream of monochrome mist as it plunged into the depths of her mouth. The same appeared on his own bestial digit. It evanesced quickly and upon extracting her own, would realize there was no longer a wound to tend to.

"Should be more careful," Mosquito said while lowering the elevated hand, placing it back atop the waiting patch of wooden floor. A subtle tilt to his head appeared before he eventually realized the context of what Mei was saying. "...Y' mean, someone ate this guy?"

"Yeah." Mei would respond. Her attention is bestowed heavily upon her thumb as she notices that the cut no longer adhered to her flesh. Several blinks would ensue before she would realize that its rejuvenation had occurred with Mosquito's aid. Her brow furrows as she dips into thought; it looked as though she were in some sort of contemplation. Then, perhaps it would have been appropriate for a lightbulb to have manifested above her head as she raises her finger as though to confirm realization.
"Wait. Do you spirits usually eat people?" Mei would enquire curiously, though an appalled look had definitely become apparent on her face.

"Do we usually eat people?" Mosquito echoed. He thought a bit. "Well, if we're big enough, we might." His kind was supposed to be confined to another realm entirely and for the longest time, they were. What tastes yokai had developed was something Mosquito had not witnessed for long enough a time to properly comment. "Why? You think some kind of demon was behind all this?"

"Well, yeah." Mei would respond promptly. Her voice was accompanied by a subtle shrug. Standing up from her position she would continue to inspect the knife. "I just don't get it, though." She shakes her head subtly as she appeared to be in some sort of contemplation. "I doubt demons would use something like a knife to skin a human. Things as generic as monster stories would just have them eat them whole. Unless there's demons out there that follow some sort of strict etiquette." Would be her brief elaboration as she continued to investigate the scene. Didn't seem like anyone noticed what happened here besides them.
