As a Kamikonjou, Azrael was charged with a noble and sacred duty, he was one of the Angels of Death. This prestigious duty meant that Azrael would be reaping the souls of those who have died and are about to die. This became Azrael's job in Koutaku-Shi and it is a job he faithfully carried out for centuries. However as time went on, Azrael began to enjoy his job more and more, becoming increasngly joyed by what he was doing. On one trip where Azrael and other fellow death angels were out reaping the souls of the dead and dying, Azrael began to get carried away with his actions. When some of his fellow death angels went to stop Azrael, he began to attack his comrads and a fight broke out between the Angels of Death. During the fight, Azrael struck down two of his fellow death angels before the rest of the group was able to get Azrael under control, however the damage was already done.

For his actoins, Azrael was to be punished, but they were unsure as to what type of punishment they should place upon the Angel of Death. Such acts as killing a fellow Angel of Death were something that was rairly, if ever, experanced. When the final judgement was decided. Azrael was to be banished from Koutaku-Shi and a curse placed upon him that sealed his powers away with in him and severed his tie to the Blessings of the Northern Heavens. Azrael was banished to Onitoshi, stripped of his powers, he had become a Onikonjou forced to live out the rest of his days in Onitoshi.
