Jyn's Movement Kyrobanner
My mind flashes back to the ‘terrorist attack’ that plagued the city. The entire incident was covered up by the Division and the city government, but in it, I found yet another reminder of how I was outperformed by my teammates simply because they were born special. I didn’t know about hitorinji’s until coming into the Division, but now that I knew about them, it almost didn’t feel fair how they had an advantage over normal humans. It seemed like they were more likely able to see spirits and had the ability of well trained athletes without even trying. This made it easy for hitorinji rookies to pass the physical portion required to be a Division 12 officer. I couldn’t allow myself to stay in meritocracy in comparison to them. Ever since joining the division I found myself training every day, even with the increase in rank from officer to sergeant. Unlike others, I was promoted for my marksmanship and ability to absorb policy and make decisions, not for my raw physical ability, though I was in good shape for a human. Still, there was no use in complaining about things that could not be changed.

Evening comes to the city as I make my way home after getting off early on a Friday. As I enter into the room, my roommate, a small gray cat by the name of Little Ghost, waits for me to enter before brushing against my leg in more of a “it’s food time” rather than a “welcome back.” With a nod, I admit, “I got it.” I make my way through the living room towards the bedroom with a duffle bag over my shoulder and a disc in my hand. While at work, I decided to borrow a training program from Angela in R&D that was a prototype reaction training simulation. I place down my things and duffle bag on my bed before making my way to the other bed room where the cat’s things were. I sit out food and refill his water and he slowly enters into the room and starts to eat from the food bowl. Leaving him to do that, I stand and make my way back to the living room, passing by the bed in my bedroom and taking the small disc with me. Reaching the living room, I approach the visual monitor with the disc, examining my system set up. I really didn’t like technical things, though I could get by like the normal person. I eventually find where to insert the media and the realm atmosphere of the disc begins to create itself, turning my living room into a gym hybrid of a gun range. From the side, Angela’s form manifests and she walks up adjusting her glasses and crossing her arms in her usual attire of a business skirt and suit hidden beneath a white lab coat.

“Welcome Sergeant Asei, to your training program. This program will increase your reflexes to that of a hitorinji or greater if successful,” she says as she stands, “as well as work on your ability to navigate a terrain by foot.” I find it interesting how she incorporated a model of herself into the program and how it was perfectly proportional, flattering herself. She turns to the side where a screen manifests and gives a demo of what looked like me doing parkour. I raise an eyebrow at the thought of me leaping from buildings and jumping off cars. I could run, but ultimately I didn’t like the concept of exerting that much energy to either chase or run from something. She continues, “the basics you should be able to learn include running along walls, moving without sound, heightened reaction, intermediate acrobatics, balance control, speed acceleration and leaping ability. Would you like to begin course 1 now or later.” I pause for a moment wondering if I should start now after work or begin on the weekend. Since I had a little bit of energy, I decide that I could at least do the first course now and then later on the weekend I could try some of the longer courses. I verbally accept the option to begin now and the scenery changes to an urban environment. Angela’s body fades away as her voice speaks, introduction course 1, preliminary obstacle course. Here you will get your time of over an urban course without the benefit of the training. This will be compared with later times as you continue your training to judge your progress.” The outline of the course is shown on a mini map that manifests to my side with a large arrow symbol in the sky. It points the direction I’m supposed to go. Intuitively, I set myself into a ready position. The system judges that I am ready and above me and to the front, large digital numbers roll down from 5 seconds to 0, then a large “go!” bolds and then fades away. I take off and start running in the direction pointed by the arrow to begin the obstacle course. 845
